Greater Los Angeles is home to more than 1,200 veterinary hospitals across a metro footprint roughly the size of Connecticut. The workforce is large, varied, and consistently stretched.

Los Angeles attracts veterinary professionals for its clinical depth, competitive salaries, and abundant opportunities. With over 1,200 hospitals across the metro spanning from GP, urgent care, emergency, and specialty medicine, it’s one of the few US cities where vets at any career stage can find a role that matches both their clinical interests and lifestyle priorities.  

Neighborhoods: Where Could Your Veterinary Career Take You in LA? 

From Westside specialty hospitals to Valley GP clinics, LA offers a range of clinical environments. Here’s where Atlas places the most, and what each area is actually like. 

Westside (Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, West Hollywood) 

The Westside has LA’s highest concentration of specialty and emergency hospitals, with several large 24-hour referral centers covering surgery, internal medicine, oncology, and cardiology. Clinically, it’s one of the strongest environments in the country for veterinarians with specialty training. However, it’s also the most expensive part of the city to live in. Santa Monica has good walkability and transport links; Beverly Hills and Brentwood are more residential and carry higher price tags. Most veterinarians working within these areas tend to commute in. 

Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley  

Pasadena has its own hospital ecosystem, a solid mix of independent and group practices, and a more manageable cost of living than the Westside. It has a walkable city center, well-rated public schools, and a local restaurant and café scene concentrated around Old Town, without the density or pace of central LA. 

South Bay (El Segundo, Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach) 

The South Bay has a growing cluster of corporate GP and urgent care hospitals, several of which have ER capability. Atlas has placed specifically in Long Beach. The area draws a steady stream of relocating vets who want coastal access without paying central LA prices. Compensation is competitive, and the commute south is more manageable than the cross-metro routes.  

The San Fernando Valley (Sherman Oaks, Burbank, Glendale, Encino) 

The San Fernando Valley has a high volume of GP and urgent care clinics, and a stronger specialty presence than it’s often given credit for. It’s one of the most active hiring areas in the metro. It’s the most affordable part of the metro for housing, with larger floor plans and lower rents than on the Westside. Sherman Oaks and Encino are established residential areas with good local amenities; Burbank has a younger feel. 

Orange County (Irvine, Anaheim, Fullerton) 

Many vets looking at LA extend their search into Orange County, and our placement data backs that up. Irvine is one of our top California placement cities. It is well-resourced, family-friendly, and more affordable than the Westside or central LA. 

Cost of Living  

Los Angeles has a higher cost of living than most US cities, but salaries for veterinarians here are among the highest in the state. 

• Median rent for a one-bedroom in LA runs approximately $2,100–$2,538 per month depending on area (Zumper and RentCafe, May 2026); Westside neighborhoods push above $3,200. 
• Median rent for a two-bedroom is around $3,361 per month (RentCafe/Yardi Matrix, May 2026). 
• The median home price in Los Angeles is approximately $910,000–$970,000 (Zillow and Homes.com, March–April 2026), with Westside properties priced well above that range. 
• Atlas’s median salary for California placements is $165,000, with 76% of our placements above $160,000 (Atlas internal data, Nov 2021–Apr 2026). 
• Sign-on bonuses of $10,000 – $25,000 and relocation packages are common, particularly for ER and specialist roles. 

Veterinarian Salaries in Los Angeles – Permanent and Relief Positions 

Los Angeles pays above the California state median across all role types. Of the vets Atlas has placed in California, 76% landed roles with base salaries above $160,000, and the median across all our California placements sits at $165,000 (Atlas internal data, Nov 2021–Apr 2026).  

Indeed puts the average Los Angeles veterinarian at $151,719, a useful floor figure, but one that understates total compensation at high-throughput practices where production models are standard. 

For relief veterinarians, ZipRecruiter reports an average annual salary in California of $163,360 as of May 2026, broadly consistent with a full schedule at the hourly rates above.

• Sign-on bonuses of $10,000–$25,000 are common 
• Relocation packages are frequently negotiable, particularly for specialist and ER roles 

Licensing Requirements in California (including Los Angeles) 

To practice as a vet in California, you must hold a license from the California Veterinary Medical Board (VMB). 

Requirements include: 

• Graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school 
• Passing the NAVLE 
• Passing the California state law exam 

Additional permits may be required for certain specialties. 

Plan for around three to four months from application to license-in-hand for out-of-state applicants. Start the application as early as possible. Most LA employers will proceed with an offer while your VMB application is in progress, but don’t leave it until you have a role confirmed.

Oliver: “Los Angeles continues to be one of the most active and competitive veterinary markets in the country, which is one of the reasons it’s personally one of my favorite markets to cover on the West Coast. We’re still seeing strong demand across general practice, urgent care, and emergency hospitals, driven by a combination of high pet ownership, dense population numbers, and the ongoing nationwide shortage of veterinarians. As a result, hospitals are actively seeking both permanent and relief DVMs to support growing caseloads and maintain work-life balance within their teams. 

Relief work, in particular, has become increasingly popular among veterinarians seeking greater flexibility and control over their schedules, while hospitals continue to offer highly competitive compensation packages, sign-on bonuses, and flexible scheduling options to attract and retain talent. 

Beyond the professional opportunities, Los Angeles offers an unmatched lifestyle outside of the hospital setting. Within a short drive, veterinarians have access to beaches, mountains, hiking trails, desert landscapes, and year-round outdoor activities thanks to Southern California’s climate. Many DVMs are drawn to the region not only for the career growth opportunities, but also for the lifestyle it provides, whether that’s surfing before a shift, weekend trips to national parks, fitness culture, or simply the ability to maintain an active, balanced lifestyle year-round.” 

Olivia: “Los Angeles is one of the most diverse veterinary markets in the country, and that’s reflected in both the caseloads hospitals see and the types of roles available. We’re seeing continued demand across GP clinics, emergency and specialty hospitals, as well as growing interest in exotic animal medicine, particularly in areas where hospitals are expanding services for birds, reptiles, and other non-traditional pets. 

One thing that makes the LA market unique is how varied the clinical environments can be within a relatively small geographic area. You can move between fast-paced urban hospitals, affluent neighborhood practices with highly advanced medicine, and more community-focused clinics, all within the same city. There’s also been a noticeable shift toward hospitals prioritizing flexibility, mentorship, and overall quality of life in order to attract and retain talent in such a competitive market. For many veterinarians, LA offers a balance of strong professional growth alongside a lifestyle that’s difficult to replicate elsewhere.”

How much does a veterinarian earn in Los Angeles? 

Salaries range from $150,000 to $185,000 for GP associates up to $240,000+ for ER and specialty roles. ZipRecruiter puts the LA County average at $179,000 and Indeed at $151,719; the gap reflects whether production bonuses are counted. Atlas’s California placed median is $165,000.

How long does it take to get a California veterinary license as an out-of-state vet?
