We’re looking for a dynamic and compassionate Medical Director to lead a team at a highly respected animal welfare organization, and directly shape the quality of care for both shelter and clinic animals in Detroit, MI.
In this exciting role, you won’t just be practicing medicine – you’ll be leading it. You’ll take on the responsibilities of a veterinarian, from diagnosing and treating various cases to performing lifesaving surgeries. But beyond that, you’ll manage and mentor an amazing veterinary team, consult on challenging medical cases and be the go-to decision-maker.
As Medical Director, you’ll oversee every aspect of veterinary operations, from hiring and training to ensuring compliance and budget goals. You’ll be afforded the opportunity to lead with vision and play a key role in shaping the future of veterinary care and promoting animal welfare.

- Lead and mentor an exceptional veterinary team
- Be the lead on medical decisions and consult on challenging cases
- Manage the scheduling, hiring, training, and performance of veterinary staff
- Oversee the use, management, and record-keeping of controlled substances
- Ensure quality control, safety protocols, and compliance with regulatory standards
- Drive continuous improvement in medical processes and outcomes
- Ensure that clinic and shelter medicine operations meet budgetary goals
- Address medical complaints and concerns from clients with professionalism and care
- Represent the organization at special events, promoting its mission and programs
- DVM or equivalent degree that allows you to practice veterinary medicine in the US
- Hold a Michigan State Veterinary License or have the ability to obtain one
- You bring at least 3 years of experience in general practice or surgery
- Leadership experience is beneficial
- Committed to practicing high clinical standards and delivering compassionate care
- Strong communicator with excellent organizational skills, energy, and enthusiasm for mentoring
