Job Description
An exciting opportunity has opened for a Medical Director to lead the relaunch of a well-established small animal hospital in Poway, CA.
This is a rare opportunity to take the clinical lead in rebuilding a previously successful 5-DVM practice, shaping everything from medical standards to team culture as the hospital reopens.
Acquired during COVID and closed for the past two years, the hospital is now entering a new phase, backed by investment and with a clear vision for growth. As Medical Director, you’ll play a central role in bringing the clinic back to life. You’ll have significant influence over equipment selection (with new investment into diagnostics, surgical tools, and in-house lab capabilities), clinical protocols, and hiring decisions as a brand-new team is built around you, including a Hospital Manager, RVT, Veterinary Assistants, and CSR.
This is a small animal GP hospital, historically serving dogs and cats, with a focus on delivering high-quality, relationship-driven care. You’ll balance hands-on clinical work with leadership responsibilities, guiding standards of care, mentoring new team members, and helping establish a strong reputation in a competitive market. The schedule is designed to support work-life balance, with weekday-only hours and flexible shift structures.
With 30-minute appointments, the ability to incorporate drop-offs and work-in cases, and the autonomy to shape workflows, this role offers the perfect blend of leadership, clinical freedom, and long-term growth potential.
- Medical Director role with full clinical leadership and decision-making authority
- Opportunity to relaunch and shape a previously successful 5-DVM hospital
- Influence over equipment purchases, protocols, and hospital setup
- Build and mentor a brand-new team (HM, RVT, assistants, CSR)
- Monday–Friday schedule with flexible shift options
- 30-minute appointments with scope to grow and shape caseload
- $200K–$225K base + 21–22% production with strong long-term upside
- DVM or equivalent degree that allows you to practice veterinary medicine in the US
- You hold (or are eligible for) a licensure in California
- Experienced in surgery and confident practicing independently
- Motivated to lead, mentor, and build a cohesive team
- Interested in shaping clinical standards and growing a hospital
- Competitive salary with strong production-based earnings (21–22%)
- Leadership opportunity with real influence over hospital direction
- Flexible weekday schedule with no weekend requirements
- Support in hiring and developing your own team
- Long-term career growth as the hospital scales
